Our focus for Digital Cleanup Day this year is Personal Data and how we can all play our part in reducing digital waste and Keeping Information Safe and Secure.
In the week leading up to Digital Cleanup Day (18 March) we are asking you to take a few moments each day to reduce your digital waste by focussing on removing copies of personal documents you no longer need.
What is Digital Cleanup Day
Digital Cleanup Day is exactly what it sounds like – time to clean up digital waste.
Why Personal Data
For this year’s campaign we are asking you to focus on personal data and removing copies you no longer need.
Having copies of unmanaged employee related data stored in multiple places increases our risk of exposure from a security and privacy perspective as well as increasing our digital waste.
What do I need to do
Use the guidance below to check the size of your folders and register what you’ve cleaned up via the link above.
This cleanup page will close 18 March 2023 23:59 CET. Please record your files sizes before this time to allow us to process all your efforts and report back what you’ve achieved.
Let’s continue to make our value of ‘stronger together’ a reality when it comes to our data.
Let’s trust each other to do the right thing.
Thank you for your support.

How to check the size of your folders to register what you’ve cleaned up
- In Outlook (Windows or OS) - Click ‘File’, and then ‘Info’. Under ‘Mailbox Settings’ you can see the size of your mailbox.
- In SharePoint/OneDrive - Log into your account on OneDrive/SharePoint online. Click on the gear icon. Click on OneDrive/SharePoint ‘Settings’. Click on ‘More Settings’. Click on ‘Storage Metrics’.
- Local Drives / Downloads - Open File Explorer and find the target folder. Right-click the folder and click ‘Properties’ to open its properties window. In the folder ‘Properties’ window, under ‘General’ tab, you should be able to see the folder size, location, number of subfolders and subfiles it contains, creation date, attributes, and more.
